Great Lakes Loons News Release
DAYTON, OH - Duke von Schamann collected his first win with the ballclub, and the Great Lakes Loons avoided a sweep at the hands of the Dayton Dragons Monday evening, winning 8-3.
Trailing 2-0, the Loons scored five runs in the top of the third and never looked back in the game.
Joe Winker drove in the Loons' first run of the game on an RBI single to right. The Loons tied the score on an RBI ground out by Pratt Maynard. Then Scott Schebler reached on an error by first baseman Sean Buckley, which allowed the go-ahead run to score and extend the inning. After a single by Jan Vazquez, Jeff Hunt followed with a two-run double to give the Loons a 5-3 advantage.
The Dragons got within two runs with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but never got any closer.
Schebler drove in the Loons' sixth run in the seventh on an RBI double. In the eighth, James Baldwin blasted a solo home run to put the Loons up 7-3. In the final inning, the Loons pushed across their eighth run on an error by second baseman Ryan Wright.
Winker collected three hits in the game. Vazquez and Darnell Sweeney had two hits each.
Making his third start of the year, von Schamann (1-0) threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) to collect the win. Five relievers combined to shutout Dayton the rest of the way. After Danny Coulombe and Juan Noriega combined to get out of the sixth inning, Steven Rodriguez, Jose Dominguez and Mike Thomas threw one inning each with two strikeouts a piece.
Three Dayton pitchers - Carlos Gonzalez, Dan Jensen and Lucas O'Rear - threw three innings each. Gonzalez (0-3) was charged with the loss.
The Loons (7-11 second half, 41-47 overall) have an off-day Tuesday, then begin a six-game homestand at Dow Diamond Wednesday night with the first of a three-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (7-11, 39-49). The game will feature an appearance by hockey legend Marcel Dionne, part of the Red Wings Legends Series, presented by MidMichigan Health. Game time is 7:05pm. Tickets are available at Loons.com or by calling 989-837-FBALL.
Right-hander Arismendy Ozoria (5-4, 4.14 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against Kernels righty Frank De Jiulio (4-2, 6.57).
