
Drew Martinez joins Kernels from Orem; Chevy Clarke assigned to Orem

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that OF Drew Martinez will join the Kernels from the Orem Owlz (PIO) and that OF Chevy Clarke has been assigned to Orem. Mike LaCassa, Minor League Operations Manager for the LA Angels, announced the move on Tuesday.
The Angels selected Martinez, 23, in the 10th round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Memphis and he spent the majority of last season at Orem where he hit .289 with 10 RBI in 39 games. He also played nine games for the Kernels last year, batting .160 (4-25) with an RBI. This year for Orem, he is batting .286 with two doubles, a triple and 7 RBI in 16 games.
Clarke was a member of the Kernels 2012 Opening Day Roster and was batting .190 with 6 HR and 27 RBI in 77 games for the Kernels. He also had nine doubles, two triples and 11 stolen bases.
With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with three players on the disabled list.
The Kernels begin a six game road trip tomorrow with a 6:05 pm game against the Great Lakes Loons, the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. They return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, July 18th and open a six game home stand with games against Fort Wayne and Lake County.
