Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Tuesday night's contest at AT&T Field between the Lookouts and Mudcats turned into an epic affair after initially taking a rather pastoral pace. The twelve-inning affair ended on a botched double play, resulting in a 3-2 win for Chattanooga.

Carolina jumped off to an early lead by plating two in the second frame. Devin Mesoraco began the inning by reaching second base on a fielding error by third baseman Ramon Nivar. After a strikeout, Denis Phipps singled to drive home Mesoraco. On the play, Phipps was able to advance to second on the throw home. After a Jose Castro single and Kris Negron hit by pitch, the Mudcats found themselves with the bases loaded with two outs. Lookouts starting pitcher Chris Withrow then walked Sean Danielson, which allowed Phipps to score. Withrow, however, would calm down to record the final out of the inning via a Jake Kahaulelio fly out.

Meanwhile, Carolina starting pitcher Tom Cochran continued to cruise with great efficiency. It would not be until the seventh inning that the crafty left would encounter any sort of turbulence.

The bottom of the seventh started in a seemingly innocuous, unassuming manner, as a Jaime Pedroza lead off single was quickly negated by a Corey Smith double play. Kyle Russell, making his Lookouts debut, got the ball rolling by hitting a triple. Nivar then atoned for his earlier error by hitting an RBI single to put the score at 2-1.

With Cochran exiting the game at the end of the seventh, the Lookouts used a similar template to tie up the score against Mudcats relief pitcher Jordan Smith.

With two outs already on the board, Dee Gordon used his sensational speed to reach first on a bunt single. After Gordon swiped second base, Elian Herrera triple to left field to bring home Gordon, tying the game, 2-2.

The game would remain knotted-up until the bottom of the 12th inning, when the Lookouts came away with the winning run. Corey Smith led off with a single off of Jeremy Horst (1-2) and advanced to second on a Russell bunt single. Nivar then hit a ground ball to second baseman Kahaulelio, who began the process of a double play by tossing it to shortstop Negron. Negron proceeded to make an errant throw to first, which allowed Smith to easily scamper home for the winning run.

Cole St. Clair (1-1), who pitched a perfect 12th, was credited with the win for the Lookouts. The Chattanooga Lookouts and Carolina Mudcats will finalize their five-game series at 11:15 A.M., tomorrow. Tickets for this game or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
