KODAK, Tenn. - With the Tennessee Smokies' lead in the Southern League North Division dwindling to a half-game, Tuesday night's contest with the Huntsville Stars seemed to have a "must-win" feel to it for the home team. Chris Carpenter & Co. came through big for the Smokies as they beat the Stars, 3-0 at Smokies Park. With the win, the Smokies extended their lead to one game over West Tenn for first.
The With one out and Tony Campana on first, Ty Wright launched an Amaury Rivas (5-4) pitch just beyond the left-field wall to give the Smokies the early 2-0 lead. The two-run shot, Wright's team-leading ninth of the year, extended his hitting streak to 11.
The Smokies looked to do even more damage in the first, as Josh Vitters singled home Robinson Chirinos to put the Smokies up 3-0. Then, with Brandon Guyer on second, Tony Thomas delivered a single to right that seemed to be a sure run. Huntsville RF Caleb Gindl had other ideas though, delivering a perfect throw to home that beat Guyer's slide.
The three-run lead was more than plenty for Carpenter (5-2), who dominated in his 6.1 inning outing. He would strike out six on the night, while allowing only three hits and one walk to pick up the win.
Tennessee's Ryan Buchter followed up Carpenter's dominant effort with one of his own, holding the Stars hitless while striking out three in 1.2 innings of relief.
Huntsville made it interesting in the ninth, putting runners on first and second with one out. The Stars' Zelous Wheeler hit what looked like would be a hit up the middle, but Tennessee SS Marwin Gonzalez's diving stop and flip to second would get the second out of the frame. David Cales (S, 4) would then get Taylor Green to groundout to second to end the game. The rubber match between the two teams is Wednesday night at 7:15 at Smokies Park. Hung-Wen Chen (5-5, 2.77) will take the mound for the Smokies while the Stars will send out Josh Butler (0-1, 4.50).
