Florida Everblades News Release

ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades all-time leading scorer Reggie Berg has decided to retire from hockey, he and the team announced today. Berg hangs up his skates after seven seasons in Southwest Florida as a member of the Everblades.

Berg, who turns 31 in September, leaves hockey as the Everblades all-time leader in points (319), goals (145), plus-minus (+86), power play goals (32), short-handed goals (11), and shots (1,119). The Anoka, Minnesota native also ranks among the all-time team leaders in assists (2nd, 174), game-winning goals (2nd, 22) and penalty minutes (5th, 334).

"I've known Reggie since he was 16-years old." Everblades president and general manager Craig Brush said. "In many ways he feels like a son to me, and it's a sad day that he's announcing his retirement from hockey. We fully understand his decision, and wish him all the best in his new career."

Berg's professional career began in 1999 after completing his collegiate career at the University of Minnesota. During his first season with the Everblades, the former 7th round draft pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1996, tallied 53 points (27g, 26a) in 52 games. During his first three professional seasons, Berg also saw time in the International Hockey League with Orlando (1999-00) and Cincinnati (2000-01) and in the American Hockey League with Lowell (2000-02).

"It's never an easy decision to give up what you love to do, and this was definitely not an easy decision for me to make." Berg added. "I truly feel though, that it was the right decision for me, my family and the team. I'm going to miss hockey, the fans and the organization. I can't thank the fans and the Everblades enough for everything they've done for my career and family, but there comes a time when you have to step back and put family first. I've put the team first for seven years, and now is the time for me to turn my attention to my family. I owe a tremendous amount of thanks to Mr. Brush for allowing me to be a part of this organization for so long, and only the great mutual respect between us allowed for that."

After electing to sit out the 2002-03 campaign, Berg returned to the Everblades in 2003-04 and notched 47 points (24g, 23a) in 40 games.
