July 19, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League and the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Donny Grover ("GROH ver"). Last year, the twenty-four year old Grover (6'1"/205 lbs.) led the South Carolina Stingrays' defensemen with ten goals and thirty-two points in fifty-four ECHL games. Grover, who will be entering his third full season of pro hockey, also played eight games with the Hershey Bears last year, picking up an assist and four penalty minutes while with the Bears in the AHL.
Grover, who hails from Boston, Massachusetts, stayed close to home for his collegiate career, spending four seasons at Northeastern University, where he scored 7 goals, assisted on 23 others, and picked up 134 penalty minutes in 144 total college games. While at Northeastern, Grover, who became the first four year letterman in team history to earn an engineering degree, was selected by the Northeastern Alumni Association as the Outstanding Student Athlete of the Year in 2005. After completing his senior season at Northeastern, Grover joined the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League for the conclusion of the 2004-05 hockey season, scoring a goal and adding two assists in six regular season games, while also playing in three playoff games for the Mallards.
In his first full pro season, Grover earned a spot on the 2005-06 UHL All-Rookie Team by leading the Danbury Trashers' defensemen with thirty-one assists and forty-one points, as he and his teammate-and now Royals teammate-Shawn Collymore helped the Trashers get all the way to the UHL's Colonial Cup Finals before being knocked off by the champion Kalamazoo Wings. Last season, Grover jumped to the ECHL, where he racked up seven multi-point performances, including a four point outburst (1g - 3a) in a 7-2 win over the Augusta Lynx on January 5, 2007. Five of Grover's ten goals last year came while the Stingrays were on the power play, including an overtime game winner against the Texas Wildcatters on January 27, 2007. After that game, Grover was called up to Hershey for over a month, during which time he played in eight AHL games before being returned to the Stingrays in mid-March. Because of that call-up, Grover was not with South Carolina when the Royals traveled to Charleston for a two game set against the Stingrays in early March of 2007.
The Royals' home opener is on Saturday, November 3, 2007, against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Royals' full Season Tickets and Total Choice Flex Plans are now on sale.
