Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
DUNEDIN, FL (August 25, 2005) - The clock struck midnight and the Fort Myers Miracle and Dunedin Blue Jays were still playing their double header. After seven hours and 45 minutes past the schedules start time of the double header the Miracle were right back where they started 2.5 games out of first as they split a double header, with the Miracle winning game one 6-2 and losing game two 6-4
With the Miracle fighting for their playoff lives in game one and trailing by a run in the final inning, the Miracle scored five runs for the victory. Jose Leger led off with a chopper over the third baseman's head for a single. Luke Hughes sacrificed him to second. Justin Arneson came off the bench and ground one that looked like it was going into center field, but pitcher Milton Tavarez stuck out his right leg and made a kick save. Arneson reached on the single and Leger went to third. Matt Tolbert lined a single to left that scored Leger to tie it at two. After Jake Mauer was hit by a pitch, Trent Oeltjen launched a grand slam home run over the right field wall, his fourth homer of the season and give the Miracle the lead they needed.
The Blue Jays jumped out to the early 2-0 lead. In the first Jayce Tingler tripled to right and scored on a sac fly by David Smith.
In the third Manny Mayorson reached on a fielding error by Luke Hughes. He went to second on a ground out and with two outs scored on a double off the wall by Smith to make it 2-0.
The Miracle cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth when Oeltjen singled to center. He stole second and with one out scored on Mark Zamojc' RBI single to center. Oeltjen finished the night 4-4 with a grand slam, four RBI and two runs scored. Miracle starter Adam Harben hurled six innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out three in picking up his ninth win of the season.
In game two the Blue Jays used the long ball to batter Miracle pitchers. David Smith hit a two out home run in the first to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
The Miracle tied it in the top of the second. Jose Leger led off with a single to right-center. Scott Whirock singled to left that send Leger to third and Whitrock moved to second. Justin Arneson's groundout scored Leger to tie it at one.
The Blue Jays took the 2-1 lead in the fourth on a solo homer by Scott Dragicevich. In the fifth the Blue Jays tacked on two more on a solo homer by Smith, his second of the game. Joey Reiman followed with a double to left-center and with one out Eric Arnold singled him home.
The Miracle made it 4-2 in the sixth whenTolbert led off with a single to right. Mauer followed with a single to right that put runners at first and second. With two outs Leger doubled to left which scored Tolbert to make it 4-2.
The Blue Jays got two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning on a two out two run double by Reiman. It turned out to be costly because in the seventh the Miracle came back with two outs. Angelo Fermin singled to left-center. Tolbert doubled down the left field line and Mauer singled them both home. Oeltjen couldn't relive his game one heroics grounding out to first to end the game.
The same two teams are scheduled to meet Friday night at Knology Park at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Jay Rainville (4-1, 1.72) to the mound.
