Long ball propels JackHammers

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (21-21) combined for three home runs to beat the Schaumburg Flyers before 2,640 fans at ALEXIAN Field on Tuesday night. Freddie Thon (2-4) hit two home runs for the JackHammers and finished with three RBIs. Doc Brooks (2-5) also hit a solo shot in the fifth inning for Joliet. It was the second consecutive game where Thon has hit two home runs. The Joliet 1B also hit two home runs in the JackHammers' 9-7 over Kansas City on Sunday.

Joliet scored a single run in the first inning against Flyers starting pitcher Steve Shippey (2-5). Mike Caruso (2-5) led off the game for Joliet by lining a pitching to center field. Nick McIntyre (1-4) smacked a single to center field to move Caruso to third base. Brooks grounded into a double play. Caruso scored for a 1-0 Joliet lead.

The JackHammers scored three runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 advantage. Thon hit a solo home run over the right field wall for a 2-0 Joliet lead. After Joey Gomes (0-4) grounded out, Steve Garrabrants (1-2) was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Wally Backman, Jr. (0-1) worked a walk and Nick Prosise (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Garrabrants. Caruso singled in Backman, Jr. for a 4-0 JackHammers lead.

The Flyers scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to get within one run at 4-3. In the second inning, Kurt Crowell (1-4) reached base with a one-out walk and moved to third base on a single by Chris Gaskin (2-5). An RBI groundout by Dan Maycock (0-5) gave the Flyers their first run of the game. Vince Harrison (1-4) hit an RBI single in the third inning and Lance Koenig (2-5) got an RBI single in fourth inning.

The JackHammers led by just one run heading into the fifth inning but that quickly changed when Brooks led off the inning with a home run for Joliet to extend the lead to 5-3.

Thon hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to make it a 7-3 JackHammers lead. After the Flyers scored a single run off of Joliet right-hander Chad Fillinger in the eighth inning, the JackHammers scored a single run in the top of the ninth inning. Thon grounded into a double play to score McIntyre.

Aaron Trolia (6-2) pitched five innings for the JackHammers and got the win. He allowed three runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out six. Chris Buechner logged a scoreless sixth inning of work while Chad Fillinger and Tyler Meigs combined to finish the game. Meigs worked one and one-thirds innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers tied their single-game high of 12 team strikeouts in the game on Tuesday. Trolia (6), Buechner (1), Fillinger (4), and Meigs combined to tie the mark for the JackHammers.

The JackHammers and Flyers continue their series on Tuesday night. The JackHammers send LHP David Moraga (5-1, 4.61) to the mound against RHP Matt Varner (1-6, 8.93) for Schaumburg.The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
