Kansas City Monarchs News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - For the second straight year the T-Bones lose outfielder Brad Correll to a major league organization. The Kansas City Royals have signed Correll and will send him to Class A Wilmington in the Carolina League.
Correll would have received an invitation to start in the 2008 Northern League All-Star Game as the top vote getter had he not been signed. Through 41 games he hit .341, good for ninth in the league while posting league-leading totals with 15 home runs and 49 RBI. Those numbers paced him for 35 home runs and 114 RBI over 96 games both of which would have set league records. Earlier this season he earned Northern League Player of the Week honors after hitting .393 from May 26 through June 1 with three home runs and 13 RBI.
"It's good for Brad. He got off to a great start, he's a great player and we're definitely going to miss him," said T-Bones manager Andy McCauley. "It's a good opportunity for him and it's even extra special that it's the Kansas City Royals. Hopefully we can follow him throughout the remainder of the season and hopefully see him make it to Northwest Arkansas, maybe Omaha and hopefully, with some luck, maybe see him on TV. But, you know it's a sad day for us because of what he brings to the clubhouse and to the field, but everybody's pretty excited for him and happy that he got the opportunity."
He leaves the T-Bones taking with him his league best .707slugging percentage and 30 extra-base hits. He is also second in the league behind teammate Rob Watson with 38 runs scored.
Correll left the T-Bones for the Boston Red Sox organization last June after hitting .333 with six homers and 17 RBI through 24 games. He ended up hitting .344 with 23 round-trippers and 80 batted in with Class A Lancaster in the Sox system.
Correll is the first T-Bone and the second Northern Leaguer to be purchased by a major league club in the 2008 season. The New York Yankees purchased RHP Drew Shetrone from the Joliet JackHammers on June 17.
