Lubbock GunSlingers News Release
Corpus Christi- The Lone Stars had the ball at their own 7 yard line with just 15 seconds to play down by a touchdown. It was another edge of your seat, nail biting, fight to the finish for the Corpus Christi Hammerheads and the Lubbock Lone Stars Saturday night in Corpus. The Lone Stars would throw three incomplete passes as time expired and now find themselves in another loosing streak falling 35-28.
It was an unusual game in the IFL as both teams were scoreless through the first half. Corpus Christi broke up all three passes at the end of the game all intended for the leagues bets receiver, Anton Paige. Paige finished with 11 catches for just 90 yards and pulled in three touchdowns.
Lone Stars quarterback, Aso Pogi, looked a little off throwing three interceptions and just three touchdowns. He would finish the night throwing 15 of 41 passes for completions the worst performance of his professional career.
The loss pushes Lubbock (8-7) back into a three way tie with Odessa and Corpus Christi for third place in the IFL standings, but they still have the inside track at a post season berth. The Lone Stars will be in the post season if they beat El Paso (0-15) at home Saturday, or if Odessa (8-7) looses to San Angelo (9-6) on Saturday.
The Lone Stars seeding in the post season is much tougher to figure out. If San Angelo losses to Odessa, Amarillo beats Corpus Christi, and the Lone Stars defeat the winless Rumble then the Lone Stars would host Odessa in the first round.
But if the Lone Star, Hammerheads, and Roughnecks should all loose then Lubbock would be the fourth seed and half to travel to Amarillo in round one.
So it all comes down to the last weekend of football. Amarillo is the only team assured of a playoff berth and a home playoff game. Lubbock, San Angelo, Corpus Christi, and Odessa can all finish anywhere from the second seed to out of the post season tournament.
So like so many games this season... It's only fitting that the IFL playoff pairings come down to the wire.
