Lone Stars Fall in Shootout

August 8, 2004 - Intense Football League (Intense) - Lubbock GunSlingers News Release

The Lubbock Lone Stars knew one thing going into Saturday night’s game with Amarillo… DO NOT GET INTO A SHOOTOUT WITH THE DUSTERS. But when the game kicked off it seemed easier said then done.

The Lone Stars lost their first home game of the season in a stunning 86-71 final that set another league record for combined points. The Dusters and Lone Stars now hold three of the 4 highest scoring games in IFL history. But this 157 points will be hard for any two teams to top.

Saturday night an IFL record crowd of over 6000 fans packed the Lubbock Coliseum to see the IFL’s top two team battle it out for league supremacy. In the end the Dusters proved who the leagues top dogs are and extended their league lead over Lubbock to three games and maintained their 2 game lead over second place San Angelo who squeaked out a two point win over El Paso Saturday night in San Angelo.

The Lone Stars played an outstanding offensive game. Anton Paige caught 9 passes for 121 yards and a new team and IFL record 7 receiving touchdowns. Aso Pogi also cemented himself as the Lone Stars starting quarterback throwing 10 touchdown passes and 305 yards in the loss.

But the defense, which failed to keep the Dusters off the scoreboard only 2 times all night, did not play the same tough nose defense they had over the last couple of games. The Lone Stars were backed up with just half of the 50 yard field to defend most of the night because of poor special teams, but only caused one turnover and failed to get an interception for the first time in over a month.

The Lone Stars dropped to third place in the standings with an 8-6 record and will travel to fourth place Corpus for a tie breaker game Saturday. The Lone Stars must get a win in one of their last two games to guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs.
