Local School Teacher, Mammoth Star to Have Jersey Retired Saturday
January 12, 2012 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - Colorado Mammoth forward Brian Langtry, who currently teaches at the Challenge School in the Cherry Creek School District, will have his #6 jersey retired by the team and raised to the rafters of Pepsi Center on Saturday night. The ceremony will be held at 7pm MST prior to the Opening Night face-off.
"I loved every minute I wore that jersey, and the fans and the organization will always be a large part of my life," said Langtry. "I played to honor my family, the fans and the organization; I hope I did that."
From the franchise's inaugural game in Colorado on January 3, 2003, when Langtry scored the game-winner in double-overtime against the defending champion Toronto Rock, to the contest nine months ago in Edmonton when he recorded his 500th career point, the Long Island native endeared himself to Mammoth fans night-in and night-out. On Saturday, the 35-year-old steals the spotlight once again as he joins Gary Gait as the only Mammoth players to have their jerseys retired.
"It's hard to believe that we'll never see Brian play in the National Lacrosse League again," said Steve Govett, Colorado's president and general manager. "He was always well worth the price of admission."
Known throughout his career for his passion and leadership, Langtry's professional focus now turns solely to educating a generation of middle-schoolers.
"At practices and in games throughout his nine years with the Mammoth, it was obvious that Brian had an uncanny ability to provide insight and knowledge to those around him," said Govett. "His students at Challenge School are lucky to have him as their teacher."
After being released by the New York Saints following the 2000 season, it appeared that Langtry's short-lived career in the NLL was over. When the Mammoth relocated from the nation's capitol to the Mile High City prior to the 2003 season, Langtry's career was resurrected. He earned a spot on the roster, and was ultimately named the league's rookie of the year. Eight seasons later, Langtry retired from the National Lacrosse League as Colorado's all-time leader in career goals with 230. Now, he's receiving the team's highest honor.
"It's an amazingly unlikely night," said Langtry, referring to Saturday's pending jersey retirement. "I thank Steve Govett and everyone involved with the Mammoth."
Single-game tickets to Opening Night and all other Mammoth regular-season home games are on sale now at the Pepsi Center box office, all Colorado Dick's Sporting Goods retail kiosks, online at TicketHorse.com, or by calling 303.53.HORSE.
