Lizards add talent in supplemental draft

December 5, 2006 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
New York Lizards News Release

The Long Island Lizards announced today that the team selected 10 players in the 2007 MLL Supplemental Draft. The draft took place on Tuesday December 5th, beginning at 1:00PM ET. Long Island had the fourth selection in nine of the ten rounds, as well as the eighth selection in round two via a 2006 trade. With its first pick (4th overall) Long Island chose goalie Joe Canuso. A 2006 graduate of Villanova, Canuso was on the Lizards roster at the end of the 2006 season.

The Lizards then reacquired attackman Andrew Lucas and defenseman Andrew Blechman with their second and third round picks respectively. The Lizards rounded out their top 5 picks by selecting goalie Kevin Thibedeau, a Division III All American from Washington College, in the fourth round and Jamie Coffin, an attackman out of Dartmouth, with their 5th pick.

"We could not be happier with how our draft went," said Jim Mule, Lizards Head Coach. "With the retirement of Greg Cattrano after last season we were left with only one goalie on our roster so it was important that we gain some depth at the position. We think Joe Canuso and Kevin Thibadeau are solid players and can battle for the starting job in the net."

"We added some depth and talent today," said Tim Kelly, General Manager of the Lizards. "I can't wait to get these guys into training camp and watch them battle it out on the field." The 5 remaining spots for the 35 man training camp roster will be filled through a one day tryout process in early 2007. The Lizards open training camp in late April with the season starting the 3rd week in May.
