Pride-Outlaws trade highlights 2007 Supplemental draft

December 5, 2006 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

Boston, MA (December 5, 2006) - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, had the 2007 MLL Supplemental Draft highlighted by a trade shortly after the conclusion of the draft. The New Jersey Pride acquired midfielder Matt Rewkowski from the Denver Outlaws for midfielder Paul Gillette. Rewkowski scored 11 goals and notched 12 assists in 11 games in 2006 while Gillette had a goal and two assists in nine games for the Bayhawks in 2006. The Pride selected Gillette with their first selection (5th overall) in today's draft.

The draft began at 1:00PM ET and lasted 90 minutes as the 10 teams quickly made 100 selections. The 10 rounds is down from last year when the teams had 22 rounds and it is just the third time in MLL history when all ten teams, the "original six" and the four expansion franchises, selected players. Philadelphia and San Francisco each had 12 picks while the Bayhawks had the least amount of selections with eight.

Attackman Athan Ianucci was the first overall pick, chosen by the Chicago Machine. Ianucci played collegiately at Hofstra. San Francisco (via a trade with Washington) made the second pick and came away with Steve Looney, a midfielder out of the Naval Academy. The Rochester Rattlers picked third and grabbed MLL veteran attackman Gavin Prout. Prout spent three seasons with the Baltimore Bayhawks (2001-02, 2005) and was part of the 2005 championship team. Long Island selected Villanova goalie Joe Canuso while New Jersey rounded out the top five picks with the selection of Gillette.

San Francisco picked up midfielder John Keysor with their second first round selection while Philadelphia picked up midfielders Brian Myers and Nolan Godfrey with the last two picks in the first round. Washington got on the board in the second round and with the 12th pick nabbed Kyle Fiay, a midfielder from Towson. The Denver Outlaws did not make a selection until late in the second round (19th overall) where they picked up midfielder Greg Bastis, a graduate of Middlebury.

There were a couple of surprises in the draft. Goalie Greg Cattrano, who has been rumored to be retiring and was left unprotected by the Long Island Lizard from their 20-man protected list, was picked up by the New Jersey Pride in the final round (95th pick overall). Aside from being regarded as the top goalie in MLL history, Cattrano also has the distinction of playing in the first five MLL championship games. In the fifth round the Pride also scooped up a potentially retiring player when they grabbed face-off specialist Chris Cercy. Cercy had a standout season for the Outlaws in 2006.

MLL teams were required to submit their 20-man rosters by 5:00PM ET on Friday, September 29 and now the rosters can expand to 35 as they head into training camp in preparation for the 2007 season.

Training camp opens for MLL teams on Saturday April 28. The 2007 MLL season begins three weeks later on May 19th.
