Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

With a first place team usually comes a dearth of post-season honors and awards and the Vero Beach Dodgers are no exception. It was announced today by League President Chuck Murphy that Manager Scott Little is one of five Vero Beach Dodgers named to the 2004 Florida State League Post-Season All-Star Team.

Little, named as a coach to the team, is joined by starting pitcher Jonathan Broxton, second baseman Delwyn Young, shortstop Joel Guzman and catcher Russell Martin. Managers included, only 21 people were selected to the post-season unit, so VBDs make up nearly 25 percent of the team.

Little has led his unit to the best record in the Florida State League this season, surviving a 15-22 start to the year. The Dodgers can clinch the second half East Division Title with a win in any of the final five games.

Broxton has been a force in the Dodger rotation all season and finds himself among the league leaders in ERA (3.23), wins (11) and strikeouts (144). Opposing batters are hitting just .231 against the Waynseboro, GA native.

Young survived a slow start of his own that saw him hitting .198 half-way through the month of May. Since that time, he has raised his average to .279 and is in the league's top three in homers (22), doubles (36), RBI (84), runs scored (76), extra-base hits (61) and slugging percentage (.511). His 36 two-baggers account for the record for most in a season by any Vero Beach Dodger in history.

Guzman likely would have been a front-runner for player of the year if not for his July promotion to Double-A Jacksonville. He had been hitting .307 with 14 homers, 51 RBI, eight stolen bases and eight triples in 87 games in Vero Beach. The 19-year-old has not slowed down since his promotion, despite being the only teenager in the Southern League. He has hit .285 with seven homers in 39 games for the Suns.

Martin rounds out the list thanks to a standout season, not only offensively, but behind the plate as well as he has led the league in assists by a catcher (90). He has held his own offensively as well, hitting .248 with 15 homers, 64 RBI and a team-best 72 walks.
