June 10, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) announce that fullback Kendrick Perry has been named the league's Offensive Player of the Week for Week 11. It is the fourth overall Player of the Week award for the Lions this season, following Earl Alexander's Offensive Player of the Week award in Week 3; Damian Daniels's Defensive Player of the Week honor that same week; and quarterback Antwon Young's PIFL Offensive Player of the Week nod in Week 5.
Perry, the PIFL's all-time leading rusher and the current league leader in rushing yards this season, accounted for three touchdowns, one on the ground and two receiving, in the Lions' 39-31 win over the Alabama Hammers on Saturday night in the Columbus Civic Center. The win broke the Lions' four-game losing streak against Alabama, dating back to the 2012 season. Perry led Columbus in all-purpose yards with 78 (58 rushing, 20 receiving) and was the only Lion with multiple touchdowns in the contest.
After two successful seasons in the PIFL with the now-defunct Louisiana Swashbucklers, Perry is enjoying a career year this season in Columbus. His 20 all-purpose touchdowns on the season rank second-best in the league, and his 754 all-purpose yards are fourth in the PIFL, easily the best by a running back and behind star receivers John Harris of Georgia (887), Mico McSwain of Alabama (816), and Phillip Barnett of Nashville (781). Perry's new found receiving prowess this season is a new weapon in the Lions' offensive arsenal, and once he catches the ball, he's been proven hard to stop. His 17.7 yard average per catch is second-best in the PIFL behind currently injured teammate Earl Alexander's 20.4 yards per reception average.
Speaking strictly in terms of rushing offense, Perry's numbers are far and away tops in the league. His 436 total yards on the ground this season are 193 yards ahead of Trenton's Melik Brown, the player with the next highest rushing total on the season. Perry is also just three yards shy of breaking his own league record for most rushing yards in a season (439) set in 2012 with Louisiana. Perry's 11 rushing touchdowns are good for second behind Harrisburg quarterback E.J. Nemeth's 13; however, eight of Nemeth's 13 came in a single game against Columbus in the Lions' season opening loss to the Stampede on the road back on March 30.
The Lions play their final home game of the season this Saturday night against the conference-leading Nashville Venom in Military Appreciation Night in the Jungle. A Lions win coupled with losses by both Alabama and Georgia would clinch a playoff berth for Columbus and would mark the seventh playoff appearance in the franchise's eight-year history. Great seats are still available. For more information, contact the Lions at 706.322.3336 or visit www.columbuslions.net.
