San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (November 22, 2002) â Lineman Albrey Battle, a three-year veteran with the San José SaberCats and an integral part of the team's championship run last season, signed a free agent contract on Friday to play two more years with the World Champions. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Our success last year was based on depth and solid play from our line," said SaberCats' head coach Darren Arbet. "Getting Albrey back here was a top priority for us."
Battle (6-3, 306) started 13 regular season games last season and posted 5.0 tackles, a quarterback sack and a pair of pass breakups. In three postseason starts he had a pair of tackles, including one for loss, in helping San José capture its first championship.
In his three years with the SaberCats, the former Arizona State Sun Devil has appeared in 35 regular season games and all seven playoff contests collecting 18.5 tackles and five sacks.
Along with Battle, the SaberCats have also inked linemen Akaba DeLaney, Darrin Kenney, Dan Loney, George Williams, Brian Johnson, Devin Wyman and Cedric Pittman to contracts for the upcoming campaign.
The 2003 season marks the historical debut of the AFL on NBC. The network will broadcast up to four AFL games on a regional basis each regular-season Sunday (except March 30) plus all playoff games for a possible total of 70 contests.
The SaberCats begin defense of their World Championship in February. Season tickets for all eight regular season games played in HP Pavilion at San Jose are on sale and can be purchased by calling a ticket representative at (408) 573-5577.
