Lights FC hosted Sacramento Republic, team that entered the weekend with the best record in USL Championship.
A bouncing cross from Sergio Gontan Gallardo ended up being capitalized on by striker Russell Cicerone with a diving header to open the score for the visitors in the 31st minute of action.
Towards the end of the first half Andrew Carleton progress inside the box was stopped by defender Jared Timmer and a penalty kick was called in favor of Las Vegas, with Carleton leveling the score in the first minute of added time. With it, Lights FC stopped a 266-minute streak without allowing a goal from Republic FC.
Sacramento re-took the lead 10 minutes into the second half, when a streaking Russell Cicerone on the left side of the pitch found Zeiko Lewis inside the box and put the ball past Leo Diaz.
With the 2-1 victory, Sacramento has the best record in the 2023 USL Championship season with 41 points, 4 ahead of San Antonio in the Western Conference and tied with Pittsburgh from the Eastern Conference but with a game in hand and a better goal differential.
It's another heartbreaking defeat for Lights FC, who lost a game determined by a one-goal difference for the eighth time in 2023.
NEXT GAME:
Lights FC will continue its three game homestand in a week, when they host the RGV FC Toros on Saturday, August 5th at 7:30 p.m.
Back to School Night will be celebrated at Cashman Field with local high school marching bands performing at halftime.
