March 24, 2006 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1)
Rockford Lightning News Release
This past season brought a lot of excitement to the loyal and passionate fans of the
Lightning who celebrated their 20th season in the Rockford community with their 14th
straight playoff appearance. There were a number of highlights from the 2005-06
season that deserve to be talked about and remembered for years to come.
Three Lightning players were named CBA Players of the Week during this past season.
Roger Powell became the first to pick up the award in just the fourth week of the
season after averaging 27.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists over three
Lightning wins. Marlon Parmer earned the award in the ninth week of the season
after averaging 23.0 points, 11.0 assists, and 6.0 rebounds while leading the
Lightning to a 2-0 record in the week. Ronnie Fields rounds out the top three with
the third and final POW award in the fourteenth week of the season averaging 33.7
points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 2.3 steals over three games. All three
Lightning starters were named among the two All-League teams with Parmer named to
the CBA All-League First Team while Fields and Powell were honored with Second
Team.
Powell was heavily awarded for his hard work and accomplishments with the Lightning
this season. Not only did he break a 12-year old Lightning record with his final
point in the final regular season game of the season when he passed Kendrick Warren
and became the Lightning's all-time leading scorer as a rookie with 1,013 points in
his first season. The 6-foot-6 guard out of the University of Illinois was also
named the CBA Rookie of the Year, and was the only rookie to be named to either of
the All-League teams.
Kenyon Gamble was named to the CBA All-Defensive Team after leading the league with
84 total blocked shots (1.8 pg.). The 6-foot-11, 230-pound center finished second
in the league in field goal percentage (63.2 pct.) while averaging 3.8 points in his
rookie season out of Tuskegee University.
Rockford had 4 starters named to the 2006 22nd annual Continental Basketball
Association All-Star game. The Lightning's own Chris Daleo coached four of his own
players as Kenyon Gamble and Roger Powell were named in their rookie seasons while
veterans Ronnie Fields and Marlon Parmer were each named for the second times in
their careers.
The 2005-06 season saw Head Coach Chris Daleo and the Rockford Lightning tie the 1992-93 Lightning for the best record (24-8) in franchise history after 32 games to start the season. Coach Daleo received 2 of the 4 CBA Coach of the Month awards this season after leading the team to a 5-1 start in November and an impressive 10-2 record in January. The four-year Lightning coach passed several coaches this season to work his way to second in Lightning history with 113 regular season wins. Daleo won his 100th career game in a 104-102 victory over the Dakota Wizards four days before coaching in his third All-Star game in four years. His .589 winning percentage (113-79 career record) ranks highest among Lightning coaches since the team's move to Rockford in 1986.
