Louisville Lightning News Release

With the 2010-2011 season just around the corner, the Louisville Lightning is finalizing the roster to make a title run. The club announced late this week two more additions - the re-signing of defender Ryan McDonald and former college star Ross Kaufman.

Ryan McDonald rejoins the Lightning after appearing in ten games with the club last season. McDonald also had a stellar collegiate career with national power and the currently top-ranked University of Louisville Cardinals. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, McDonald earned all-state, all-region, and all-district honors in high school at Nashville's Franklin Road Academy.

The midfielder and forward made 18 appearances for the Cardinals as a freshman, then made eight starts for Ken Lolla's squad as a sophomore. McDonald played in 21 games as a junior, starting 20, and assisted on the equalizer against Indiana, a game the Cards went on to win. He scored six goals as a senior for the Cards, earning team MVP honors.

In ten appearances for the Lightning last season, McDonald netted seven goals and added an assist, tying him for eighth on the team in scoring. Prior to joining the Lightning, he also made appearances for the Nashville Metros of the PDL.

The Lightning also signed Ross Kaufman to a one-year deal on Thursday. The goalkeeper will back up Frank Peabody on the squad this season. A native of Louisville, Kaufman played his collegiate soccer at Saint Louis University.

As a junior with the Billikens, Kaufman earned the Mark Demling Award, given to the player who puts the team first and plays unselfishly. He was also named to the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-Region squad as a senior last year. He earned Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week honors as a freshman, and posted a 12-3-1 record with a 0.81 Goals Against Average. Kaufman's steady hands led the Billikens to the second round of the NCAA tournament last year as a senior. Kaufman also led St. Louis with a clean sheet in an upset of then-ninth-ranked Indiana University as a freshman, where he played against Lightning teammate Darren Yeagle.

McDonald and Kaufman will both be in uniform for the Lightning's first exhibition match on Friday night. For more information on the team's 'Kick Cancer' game, check out:
