STOCKTON, CA - The Stockton Lightning (2-4) fell to the Central Valley Coyotes (4-2) in a 63-61 loss at Stockton Arena in front of 7,159 on Saturday night.
The Coyotes opened up the game with a touchdown as QB Scott Rislov connected with WR Marvin Brown for a 3-yard score. The Lightning quickly responded when OS Atnas Maeko pulled in a 35-yard bomb from QB Josh Blankenship on the first play from scrimmage to pull even with the Coyotes at 7-7.
WR LaMonte Jones scored on a screen pass from Rislov to help the Coyotes regain the lead at 14-7. On the ensuing possession, Stockton tied the game when Blankenship connected with Maeko again for an 8-yard score to bring the first quarter to a close at 14-14.
The second quarter began with Rislov finding WR Tim Wilkins in the end zone for a Coyote score. The Lightning answered when Blankenship plummeted into the end zone on a quarterback keeper to knot the game at 21-21. Rislov completed his fourth touchdown pass of the game to help the Coyotes take a 28-21 advantage. The Lightning countered once again with a quick 11-yard screen pass score to WR/LB James Newson. The teams exchanged touchdowns to end the first half knotted at 35-35.
Stockton looked to take control of the game in the third quarter and did just that when Blankenship connected with WR Phil Goodman for a touchdown to the open the quarter. However, the extra point was no good. The Coyotes scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run by FB Matt Guardia to take a 42-41 lead.
With the Lightning pressing for another score, Blankenship was pressured and intercepted by Wilkins. The Lightning made a huge defensive stand by forcing the Coyotes into a missed field goal attempt. Goodman made a tough catch at the goal line for a Lightning touchdown to end the third quarter.
Central Valley started the fourth quarter by scoring a touchdown when Rislov connected with Jones to take a 49-48 advantage. The Coyotes defense forced the Lightning to turn the ball over on downs. Both teams then traded touchdowns, and the Lightning failed on a 2-point conversion to tie the game. Maeko was named the Schutt Offensive Player of the Game with 10 catches for 175 yards, and 4 touchdowns in only his second game with the Lightning.
