
LHP Jose Paulino placed on 7-day disabled list

The Chicago Cubs have announced the following roster moves affecting the Myrtle Beach Pelicans:
-LHP Jose Paulino has been placed on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21.
-RHP Erick Leal has been assigned to Myrtle Beach from Extended Spring Training. He will wear No. 28.
-OF Chris Pieters, who is on the disabled list, is no longer assigned a number.
-RHP Kyle Miller has been released from the Chicago Cubs' organization.
-RHP Elvis Diaz has been released from the Chicago Cubs' organization.
Paulino has struggled this season for Myrtle Beach, going 0-6, 9.85 ERA in seven starts. Last year with Low-A South Bend, he also got off to a slow start, posting a 3.45 ERA in the second half of the season compared to a 6.04 mark in the first half. Overall with South Bend, Paulino posted a 7-6 record and 4.51 ERA, yielding 125 hits in 123.2 innings. He struck out 94 and walked 42. A native of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic, Paulino was originally signed by the Cubs on July 20, 2011.
A member of the Pelicans' 2016 championship squad, Leal missed the entire 2017 campaign and early part of this season with an injury. With Myrtle Beach in 2016, the Valencia, Venezuela native went 10-4 with a 3.23 ERA, surrendering 92 hits in 94.2 innings, striking out 66 against 22 walks. Leal was originally acquired by the Cubs in a trade that sent OF Tony Campana to the Arizona Diamondbacks on February 18, 2013.
Miller pitched in a pair of games in 2018, totaling two innings with four runs allowed on five hits. He has struck out five against three free passes. A native of Fort Myers, Fla., Miller pitched in 32 games between Myrtle Beach and South Bend a season ago, ceding 92 hits in 90.2 frames. He whiffed 58 batters and walked 33. A 19th-round pick by the Cubs in 2015, Miller pitched collegiately at Florida Atlantic University.
Diaz appeared in four games with Myrtle Beach, yielding seven runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings. He has also spent time in 2017 with Low-A South Bend, where he pitched in two games and gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits in 5.0 innings. A native of Santiago in the Dominican Republic, Diaz was originally signed by the Kansas City Royals as a non-drafted free agent on September 2, 2011. He spent the 2012 season with the DSL Royals before getting released. In June of 2013, Diaz signed as a minor league free agent and pitched with the DSL Orioles2 in 2013 and DSL Orioles1 in 2014. After getting released in February of 2015, and did not pitch the 2015 campaign professionally. The Cubs signed Diaz as a minor league free agent on May 25, 2016, and the right-hander pitched between Short Season Class A Eugene and South Bend in 2017.
The Pelicans' roster sits at 25 active players, with four players on the disabled list.
