Lexington Sporting Club News Release
GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Lexington Sporting Club defeated South Georgia Tormenta FC in a 2-1 final at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown, Ky., earning the first win in club history on Saturday.
The win also brought the first Lexington Sporting Club goal for Nico Brown and the first professional goal for Owen Green.
"We worked really hard and we played well together," Brown said. "It was a great result for us and we keep working, this is not the end result. It's good to finally get three points."
The home team entered the game one week after earning its first point in club history in a 0-0 draw against Forward Madison FC in the club's inaugural home opener.
With the sun beating down in Georgetown, 2,621 fans showed out for the home side, which wasted little time scoring the first goal of the night in the 15th minute thanks to Brown.
Brown was assisted by Ates Diouf on the goal, which marked the second goal in the first 15 minutes for Lexington, which leads the league.
With Tormenta FC unable to equalize, Lexington SC entered the halftime break up 1-0, the first ever halftime lead for the club.
With both sides making a halftime substitution, it would quickly be Tormenta FC that would gain the upper hand in the half, equalizing the game on a penalty kick by Jackson Khoury.
The home side refused to back down though, continuing to fight for opportunities until the 72nd minute when the effort paid off when Green, assisted by Phila Dlamini, got one past the Tormenta defense to reclaim the lead.
The goal by Green would prove to be the decisive score with the officials blowing their whistle for full time not long after, sending the home fans into a frenzy.
"I've spoken so much about this group of men, these players, how hard they want it, how much they want to work, how much they're prepared to go the extra mile to do it," head coach Sam Stockley said. "They're all bought in, they're a fantastic group and hopefully now you see it on the field. How much it means to us and how much it means to you as a community to try and be successful."
South Georgia Tormenta controlled the possession in the match, holding the ball 55.1% of the time, but it was Lexington SC who finished with a 1.74 to 1.40 advantage in expected goals.
Next up for Lexington SC is the club's third consecutive home stand against Greenville Triumph SC on Saturday, April 22, at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown, Kentucky.
