Legion FC Defender Jonny Dean Signs with MLS Team
January 12, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Birmingham Legion FC News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Birmingham Legion FC announced today that 2022 All-League Second Team defender Jonny Dean has signed with Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire ahead of the 2023 season.
"It's bittersweet for us as Jonny is a player that we love, but we're proud of him for earning this opportunity," said Jay Heaps, Legion FC President and General Manager. "Building our roster is a balance as we want to sign the best, most talented players we can to compete for a championship, but when a player like Jonny develops playing for the Legion, we're excited when an opportunity like this is presented."
Jonny "Hotlinks" Dean used his pace and work rate to become an instant fan favorite after signing for the club as a rookie out of the University of Central Florida ahead of the 2020 season. He immediately locked down a starting spot at right back for Head Coach Tommy Soehn, and has not looked back since, playing in 81 of the Club's 85 league games the past three seasons. That durability culminated in Dean becoming the only outfield player in the 2022 USLC regular season to play every minute of every match.
Jonny Dean Highlights - 2022
Dean turned in his best season as a pro last year, en route to six Team of the Week appearances and a place in the USL Second Team. The Macon, Georgia product was second on the Legion team in chances created (56) a tally good for first place in the league amongst defenders. He was also first on the team in crosses (91), second in blocks (22), third in clearances (74), third in interceptions (47), third in assists (five), tied for third in tackles (60), and scored two goals.
"I would like to thank everyone at Birmingham Legion FC, from the ownership group, front office, coaches and staff to my teammates, and of course the awesome fans that welcomed me with open arms three years ago, for the continuous support," said Dean. "I'm excited for this next opportunity in my professional career and look forward to what's next. It's not a goodbye but a see you later!"
