Hickory, NC - A philanthropic team of 2013-2014 Leadership Catawba (LC) participants dedicated their courtyard rejuvenation service project today at Conover School. Teachers and staff of the school were in attendance for the event to help celebrate the renovation.

Sabina Hardy, Chamber of Commerce sponsor for Leadership Catawba welcomed everyone to the dedication. Each Leadership Catawba team member voiced to the teachers and staff why they chose this project and how much they appreciated what the school does for their students and community.

Leadership Catawba team members surprised the school and presented Phyllis Pegram, Principal of Conover School, with a $1,000 check from funds that were raised to support the courtyard renovation. "Due to in-kind donations, none of the money collected had to be used for any of the renovations," said Hardy. "Instead, the gift was given to the school for their capital fund." Priscilla Palmisano, Assistant Principal of Conover School noted "Leadership Catawba has recognized the needs of Conover School for two years. Last year, they were able to refresh our memorial garden. This year, they were able to give our students a beautiful, relaxing, and accessible outdoor learning environment. The students and staff are grateful for their hard work and we look forward to furthering our partnership in the future."

The team chose Conover School as their service project based on their tour of the school though the Leadership Catawba program of the Chamber of Commerce of Catawba County. During that tour, the children touched the hearts of the group, and they all recognized the courtyard needed some attention. On November 18, 2013 the team had a work day to rejuvenate the courtyard. Members pulled weeds, pruned trees, painted landscape timbers added a water fountain, evergreens and pansies. The students' birdhouses and feeders were intermixed in the trees to attract birds.
