Lawton-Fort Sill Faces Rochester in Championship Rematch
February 21, 2011 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Rochester RazorSharks News Release
This is the second of four meetings between the Premier Basketball League's 2010 Playoff finalists. The defending league champion Cavalry won the first game at home on February 6, 99-86.
The RazorSharks (4-6) have won back to back games to start a seven game homestand. In doing so, the RazorSharks avenged road defeats at both Kentucky and Halifax.
In its loss at Lawton, Rochester played without guard Keith Friel and forward Mike Williams. It was the last of a four game road losing streak for the Sharks.
It was also the first of three straight games Rochester has held opponents under 100 points. Opponents scored over 100 in six of the RazorSharks' first seven games. The 88 scored by Halifax Saturday were the fewest surrendered in Rochester's past 25 games at home.
Sammy Monroe has averaged 18.3 points per game since his return to the team three games ago. Jerice Crouch is Rochester's scoring leader with 16.7 points per game. Eric Walton has averaged 16.7 over his last four games, with 38 total rebounds.
The Sharks are sixth in the seven team PBL in turnovers averaging 19.3 per game. But they have improved in that category, committing just 23 in their last two games combined. Rochester committed 23 in its loss at Lawton.
The Sharks seek their first three game winning streak of the season. They are 3-1 at home. 1-5 on the road.
The Cavalry (10-1) have won four straight since their only defeat of the season at Quebec, including the last two on the road at Dayton and Kentucky. The game in Rochester concludes a three game road trip for Lawton-Fort Sill.
The Cavalry are very efficient. They lead the PBL in points scored and field goal percentage. They lead the league in field goal percentage against and are second to Halifax in points surrendered per game. They are second in team assists.
It is a collective effort. LFS has no one scoring in the league's top ten. Jermaine Blackburn's 13.8 ppg leads the team. Elvin Mims represents a presence inside with nine rebounds per game and 1.36 blocked shots per game.
Of note: Lawton coach Michael Ray Richardson was the fourth overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks (behind only Mychal Thompson, Phil Ford and Rick Robey). He had an eight year NBA career curtailed by substance abuse.
Of note: The game brings together the PBL's two top shot blockers. Rochester's Jared Carter leads with 15 in ten games. LFS's Mims is second.
Of note: The Cavalry have won three straight league championships, two in the Continental Basketball Association and last year's in the PBL.
Of note: Rochester continues its homestand Saturday against Dayton.
Quotable: Rochester coach Rod Baker, "People have to take notice of what you do, when you do it against the best."
