San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Beginning a new series in Corpus Christi, the Missions pitching staff dominated against the Corpus Christi offense. Reggie Lawson started things off with five solid innings before three Missions relievers combined for four shutout innings in relief. The offense did its job as well, scoring five runs on nine hits. The Missions are back in the win column with a 5-1 final.
After having their final two games of the homestand canceled over the weekend, the Missions roster was dissected and pieced back together for their road trip to Corpus Christi. With four newcomers in the starting lineup, the offense grabbed an early lead right away. Facing Jimmy Endersby, Domingo Leyba hit a two-out single to extend the inning. Juan Fernandez moved him into scoring position with a double. Thomas Milone drove in both runners with a double to left field. The Missions took a 2-0 lead.
Endersby settled in after the rough first inning. The right-hander did not allow another run during his outing. He did base hits in the second and third innings but was able to keep the Missions off the scoreboard.
Reggie Lawson, who was supposed to start on Saturday, was the starting pitcher for the Missions. Lawson cruised through the first three innings and did not allow a base hit to the Hooks offense. Corpus Christi changed that in the bottom of the fourth inning. Justin Dirden started off the inning with a solo home run. His seventh long ball of the season cut the Missions lead in half to 2-1.
Lawson pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, he allowed a two-out double to Wilyer Abreu. With the one-run lead in the balance, Lawson recorded a fly out to end the inning. For Lawson, his night ended after the fifth inning and it was his longest outing since May 2nd, 2019. He also records his first win since May 2nd, 2019 as well.
The Missions offense added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Facing Matt Ruppenthal, Juan Zabala and Rafael Fermin hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. After Willmert Paula drew a walk, Zabala scored on a wild pitch from Ruppenthal. Connor Hollis drove in Fermin and Paula with a single to center field. The Missions improved their lead to 5-1.
Michel Baez was the first arm out of the bullpen for the Missions. He tossed a scoreless sixth inning while striking out the side. Dinelson Lamet pitched a scoreless seventh inning while allowing a hit and striking out one batter. Alek Jacob finished off the game with two shutout innings while allowing one hit and striking out three batters.
