
Late Run Powers Smokies to Victory

Birmingham, AL - The Tennessee Smokies beat the Birmingham Barons 2-1 on Saturday night in Birmingham. A ninth-inning run gave Tennessee a win in the series finale.
Birmingham scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning, making it 1-0 Barons. Tennessee tied the game at 1-1 when Charcer Burks hit a solo home run to center field in the fifth inning. It was the sixth home run of the season for Burks. The game remained tied until the ninth inning. After Eddy Martinez reached second on a throwing error with one out, P.J. Higgins drove him home on an RBI-single to make it 2-1 Smokies.
Duncan Robinson started on the mound for the Smokies. Robinson pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk. He also struck out five in the start. Robinson was relieved by Preston Morrison to start the seventh inning. Morrison threw a scoreless frame, striking out one batter. He handed the ball to Wyatt Short to open the eighth inning. Short pitched a scoreless inning, striking out one. Allen Webster threw a shutout ninth inning to close the game and earn the save.
Tennessee is now going to return to Kodak for a five-game home stand against the Jackson Generals. Matt Swarmer (3-4, 3.47 ERA) is going to start Sunday's 5:30 p.m. game for the Smokies. Swarmer is coming off 6.0 innings against Birmingham, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six. He is holding batters to a .238 batting average in games at Smokies Stadium this season.
