Late Rally Runs out of Steam

Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, WI - June 10, 2012 - Josh Cyr (JR, Univ. of North Alabama) came up with a clutch hit in ninth, but the big hit was few and far between for the Rafters who stranded 12 runners Sunday, losing to the Lakeshore Chinooks 9-5. The Rafters lost their fourth straight and second consecutive game at home, this time in front of 1,058.
Once again, the Rafters' starter did not walk a batter. The combined efforts of Wormington (JR, Valparaiso University) and Ronnie Muck (SO, Univ. of Illinois) issued only one free pass and struck out six, but once again the Lakeshore bats were hot. The Chinooks knocked at least one base hit in every inning after the first, tallied 13 combined, 30 for the two-game series.
A homer from Eric Aguilera, his second, would give the Chinooks a 1-0 lead in the second, and they lead the entirety of Sunday's contest. Lakeshore piled on in the ninth, plating four runs to take a 9-3 advantage. The four would prove to be important.
Two Rafters batters would be retired consecutively in the ninth, but a two out rally stirred. Austin Neary (FR, Western Carolina Univ.) reached on Matt Morse's third error of the game, and then Cyr his second long ball, making it 9-5. The next two Rafters, Brandon Hohl (JR, Univ. of Illinois) and Nick Ammirati (JR, Mississippi State Univ.) reached on a walk and a single. Then Michael Jurgella watched home-plate umpire Justin Houser ring him up on strikes, finishing up a strong outing from Josh Uhen (1-1) who picked up the win tossing 5.2 innings.
Wormington (0-1) took the loss for the Rafters in his first start. Alex Bacon (SO, Univ. of North Florida) reached base for the twelfth consecutive game. The Chinooks' Charlie Markson, seeking a hit in his twelfth straight did not play.
The Rafters (5-7) host Green Bay (5-7) before going to Green Bay Tuesday. Monday's first pitch at 7:05 will be a part of Incourage Community Foundation Night. It will also be a chance to pick up a great giveaway! The Rafters will be handing out reusable tin bottles at the front gates while supplies last.
