Elmira Pioneers News Release
Elmira, NY- Despite a season high three home runs for the Pioneers a three run seventh inning by Quebec helped the Capitales edge Elmira 6-5 on Friday night.
After a two run home run in the first inning off the bat of Jeremy Dodson and a solo home run in the second from Jason Bryan put Elmira ahead 3-0 it looked as if the Pioneers were set to blow out the Capitales. But six Quebec runs between fourth and seventh innings erased three three-run leads for Elmira and dropped the Pioneers to 2-12 on the season.
After Bryan's second inning homer Quebec got one run back in the fourth off a Buck McNabb RBI single the Pioneers went back up three on a Yuji Nerei leadoff home run to make it 4-1. In the fifth Quebec once again cut the Pioneers' lead to two on a John Ballon homer, but once again the Pioneers re-upped the lead to three in the bottom half of the inning on a Bryan RBI double. Bryan's RBI double put Elmira up 5-2, but unfortunately that would be all the scoring for the Pio's on the evening. In the sixth inning Quebec picked up their third run of the game on one of Elmira's two errors on the evening. In the seventh the Capitales opened up the offense scoring three times to go up 6-5.
Elmira starter Julio LaSalle started the game and went six innings allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out six in getting a no-decision. Pioneers' reliever Curt Borland (0-1) took the loss pitching 1/3 of an inning allowing one run on one walk. Quebec starter Keith Dunn picked up his third win of the season despite allowing five runs, including three home runs over seven innings of work. Greg Runser came on for Quebec and pitched a perfect ninth to pick up the save
