Late rally gives Cats 5-3 win
The Cats rallied to score four runs in the eighth inning en route to a 5-3 comeback win over Pensacola Friday night at LaGrave Field. It was the fourth straight win for the Cats who saw their second-half record improve to 9-3.
In front of a crowd of 3,182, the Cats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Terence Green led of with a triple and then scored on a dropped fly ball by the shortstop Carlos Mendoza.
The Pelicans rallied quickly to tie the game in the second inning when Jose Salas hit a solo homer, his third of the season.
Pensacola added a run in the fourth inning on a homer by Carlos Mendoza, his second in as many games.
Mendoza struck again in the eighth inning when he drove home Bernard Caston with a double to right center to put the Pelicans up 3-1.
Trailing by two going to the bottom of the eighth, Ken Lup led off the inning with a walk, Green reached on an error and Terrell Merriman reached on a bunt single to load the bases.
The next batter, Tony Mota hit a ground ball on which the third baseman Trino Aguilar threw home trying to get Lup, but threw the ball past the catcher. On the play, Green also crossed home plate to knot the game at 3-3.
One out later, John Allen singled to left, scoring two and giving the Cats a 5-3 lead.
Cats' starter Logan Stout went a season-high seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits. The right-hander struck out eight and walked one. Matt Harrington (3-0) earned the win as he pitched an inning in relief.
Juan Figueroa worked a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save of the season.
Nick Singleton started for Pensacola wand went seven innings, permitting a run on six hits. Newcomer Luis Alvarado (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed four uneared runs in the eighth.
The finale of the four-game series is Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Mike Smith (6-4) will go for the Cats. He will be opposed by Pensacola's Santos Hernandez (4-4).
