Clearwater Threshers News Release
TAMPA, Fla.- The Clearwater Threshers broke a tie game with three runs in the eighth inning, on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Yankees on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Threshers (3-10) have now won their past two games, earned their first series win of the year by taking two of three from Tampa.
Clearwater was relatively quiet at the plate against Yankees' starter Rafael De Paula, plating one run on two hits in six innings against the righty.
The Threshers plated the first run of the game in the second inning, when Casey Serna grounded out to shortstop to bring home Harold Martinez from third.
Tampa brought in Zach Woods (0-1), who had an effective first inning of relief in the seventh, allowing a one-out single. However, his second inning would not be as clean.
After walking Anthony Phillips to lead off the eighth, Brian Pointer reached on an error to give the Threshers two runners with nobody out.
Phillips and Pointer would come around to score two batters later when Aaron Altherr hit a triple to right field, giving him his first two RBIs of the season.
Martinez would bring in Altherr with a single to center to give the Threshers the 4-1 lead.
Threshers' starting pitcher Miguel Nunez (1-1) was brilliant on the mound, allowing just one run in seven innings and striking out six.
The Yankees' lone run off of Nunez came in the fourth inning when Dante Bichette Jr. hit a home run to left field that tied the game at one.
Nunez would run into a bit of a jam later in the inning when the Yankees (7-6) had runners at second and third and one out, but Nunez was able to retire both Zach Wilson and Reymond Nunez on strikes to end the threat.
The Yankees threatened in the ninth before Lee Ridenhour came on to close the door.
With Dan Child on the mound, the Yankees were able to get their first two batters aboard via walks.
Ridenhour came on to relieve Child and got Nunez to ground into a 4-3 double play. Ridenhour was then able to get Claudio Custodio to ground out to shortstop to end the game and give the Threshers their second win in as many nights.
The Threshers will look to continue their winning streak at home against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be head live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. Thursday will also be the first Ladies Night of the season at Bright House Field.
