
Late Defensive Stand Leads To Roughnecks Win, 49-46

MIDLAND, TX. : In an exciting back-and-forth battle on Saturday, April 17, the West Texas Roughnecks held one last defensive stand to seal a 49-46 win over the Austin Turfcats. The Roughnecks came back from being down as much as 17 points to win the ball game and improve to 2-4. Roughnecks defensive linemen James Vess held running back Keith Clay short on fourth down and goal to seal the win and help snap the Roughnecks four-game losing streak.
The Turfcats got on the board first with a 40-yard touchdown pass from QB Deron Ellis to WR Austin Willis. The Roughnecks countered with a 36-yard touchdown pass from QB Tommy Jones to WR Ryan Bugg to tie the game at seven. Austin regained the lead at 14-7 with a one-yard touchdown fun from Deron Ellis. The Roughnecks tied the game at 14 as WR Josh Floyd ran in a two-yard touchdown run.
Austin surged to a ten point advantage when Darren Brown added a field goal and LB Ryan Miles recovered a Tommy Jones fumble in the end-zone to give the Turfcats a 24-14 lead.
The Roughnecks cut the lead to 24-20 when Tommy Jones found WR Ryan Bugg for a 11-yard touchdown pass. The Turfcats extended their lead back to 30-20 when Ellis found Bobby Mason for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Austin took their largest lead of the night when Shon Mitchell returned a fumble back 49 yards for a score to give the Turfcats a 37-20. One of the big turning points of the game was Tommy Jones finding WR Steve Bergeski for a last-second 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 37-27 at halftime.
The Roughnecks took the momentum into the second half by cutting the lead to four as Tommy Jones found WR Nathaniel Dunn for a 19-yard touchdown pass, making it 37-33.
Following a Darren Brown field goal for Austin, the Roughnecks tied the game at 40 with a two-yard touchdown run by Josh Floyd. Austin regained the lead as RB Keith Clay punched in a three-yard touchdown run. The Roughnecks were forced back on defense following a Tommy Jones fumble, but DB Austin Smith intercepted Deron Ellis, returning it 50 yards for a score to tie the game at 46.
Roughnecks kicker Zeke Arevalo added a 28-yard field goal to give the Roughnecks the lead with under two minutes remaining at 49-46. The Roughnecks sealed the win as DL James Vess held Keith Clay short of the goal line on fourth down with 15 seconds remaining in regulation.
