Over a Cup of Coffee
by Jerry Hewitt
April 17, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Nothing is better on a quiet Saturday morning than too-strong coffee and OurSports Central's news offerings to get the indoor football day going. As I go about drinking my morning coffee, I search OSC, aifafans.com, the official league sites and others to find out what is going on with the sport.
Last night
To begin with I missed the San Jose at Wyoming game in yesterday's article. A big thanks to the Casper Star Tribune for their live chat during the game. This contest certainly qualified as one not to miss, at least before it started. At the half Wyoming enjoyed a comfortable 32-7 lead. It didn't get much better for San Jose in the second half as Wyoming dominated in the 54-25 win. This should come as a bit of a surprise, except maybe to the Cav's diehards. Everything pointed to this being the closest of contests between the leaders pf the AIFA West.
Richmond 2-4 traveled to Erie 2-3. According to AIFAFans.com a good crowd of at least 3000 watched as the underdog Erie Storm took advantage of home field advantage in downing the visitors 44-35. Erie never trailed in the game.
In CIFL action last night, Wisconsin 2-1 jumped out to 16-0 first quarter lead and never looked back in shutting out Fort Wayne 1-2, 49-0. The Wolfpack defense held the Firehawks to just 70 yards and four first downs. With the win, Wisconsin draws into a tie for second with Marion who has a bye this week.
What's really sad is the AIFA is the only league of the big 4 that makes no attempt at live scoring. Its great they have fans and media that pick up the ball to keep those who can't attend games up to date. There are some good professional teams in the AIFA, but they deserve better from the league.
On to tonight
The AIFA only has two games on the schedule tonight, the Fayetteville Guard 1-3 up at New Jersey 0-4 and the Baltimore Mariners looking to protect their 5-0 record on the road at 3-2 Reading. No question this game at the Express is one not to miss. This will be the first of two meetings between the two teams.
In the CIFL, Miami Valley, now losers of 17 straight, get another chance to break that streak on the road against 0-2 Chicago. Will this be the week the Silverbacks finally get a long overdue win?
The IFL has seven games going tonight with the best being Green Bay 5-1 at West Michigan 3-1 and Arkansas 4-1 at San Angelo 4-1. The winner of the Arkansas-San Angelo game takes sole possession of first in the Lonestar East. San Angelo has been a surprise this season while Arkansas has made the transition from arena ball to indoor very easily. Green Bay, also coming from af2, has made the transition easily as well, while West Michigan has been a surprise with only one loss to date. In other games, Corpus Christi 2-4 is at Abilene 0-5. This game marks the debut of Abilene's new coach, Rodney Blackshear and a good chance to get their first win. Alaska 2-4 is at Billings 4-12 and the Wild won't do anything to slow the Outlaws march towards winning the Pacific. Also Maryland 0-4 is at Bloomington 2-3 and Austin 2-2 at West Texas 1-4
The SIFL features three games tonight which ought to be a challenge for the Twitter updaters. Stepping in to replace defunct Houston is the North Georgia Bulldogs from the RIFL at the Columbus Lions 1-1. Lafayette 0-1 is up at Albany 1-0 while Greenville 2-0 is down in Lake Charles 1-2 to take on Louisiana. The Swashbucklers need to turn things around with this game or start thing about how to regroup for next season. A win here isn't critical, but the time to get on the winning track coming fast.
Sunday's action
The IFL has the only Sunday games this week. In a bold move to turn it around, winless La Crosse 0-5 has predicted a win over visiting Sioux City 2-3 or their next home game is free for all fans. Sioux City has made some roster changes this week to make a move up in their division. In other games, Tri-Cities 1-3 is at in-state rival Kent 2-3 in a rematch of their game two weeks ago in which the Predator QB had his way with the Fever defense. The offensive formation Kent used has been ruled illegal and that difference might result in a Fever win. Tri-Cities defense finally showed up last week against Fairbanks in a close win. Closing out the week's schedule, Amarillo 4-0 is at 0-5 Colorado. Colorado made an ownership change a couple weeks ago, but has made no other changes that are needed to get on the winning side of things. Meanwhile Amarillo, another af2 transfer is easily heading towards a division championship. Last, division leader Richmond 4-1 is at Rochester 3-2. Rochester can make a mess of the Atlantic East with a win. If West Michigan wins along with Rochester getting this home win, Richmond will drop into a second place tie with the Raiders. If West Michigan loses and Rochester wins, Richmond and Rochester will be tied for the division lead with West Michigan remaining in second.
From the headlines
West Texas released its GM and announced the owner is taking on the day to day operations, stating he needs to be more hands on. Maybe this is a step in the right direction with the Roughnecks sitting at 1-4 on the season. Still making moves to improve, the Tri-Cities Fever added a couple new players this week heading into their game at Kent. Amarillo at 4-0 isn't sitting still either as they added a couple new players as well. I didn't realize that Fort Wayne of the CIFL had a female kicker. From the news article Katie Hnida was the first woman to score in Division 1A while with New Mexico in 2003.
