Las Vegas Wranglers Bought by Wranglers Hockey LLC
Las Vegas, NV - The Las Vegas Wranglers(r) have been bought by Wranglers Hockey LLC led by Gary Jacobs of San Diego. The ECHL Board of Governors unanimously approved the transfer of ownership Tuesday at the ECHL Board of Governors June meeting in Las Vegas.
"This is a team that has an impressive past and a bright future," Jacobs said. "No one was immune to the recent economic downturn, but the team has a tremendous reputation in Las Vegas and continued to draw fans last season. That is a great testament to the Las Vegas community, and the team's purpose as being a true value for family- and value-based entertainment."
Jacobs has been the managing owner of the Lake Elsinore Storm Professional Baseball team since 2001, Class-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. He is highly regarded for his community leadership and an array of visionary projects.
"Furthering the team's presence in the Las Vegas community will be a top priority," Jacobs said. "We are here to serve our sponsors, fans and the community."
The acquisition should assure fans that the Wranglers are staying in Las Vegas Wranglers President and COO Billy Johnson said.
"This community has seen about 20 professional sports teams come and go," Johnson said. "Any time there is a visual difference in attendance for a game people speculate. But this team has completed seven seasons. We're very proud of that. Vegas is home to the Wranglers. We're staying."
"The group has attended games last season and taken a look at its history and all of the numbers," Jacobs said. "It's a team that is a great product, great past, a world-class facility in the Orleans Arena. There is a great future for our relationship with Las Vegas."
Jacobs said that fans can expect some new twists over the coming months.
"Even before we completed the transaction we began work to do things like lowering ticket prices for our season ticket holders," Jacobs said. "We look to take the greatest hits from our success with Storm baseball and combine it with the things that the Wranglers do very well. It's exciting and I know our fun in doing it will be contagious."
A formal press and fan conference introducing Jacobs to Las Vegas will be planned for a time closer to the season.
