Pensacola Pelicans News Release
A little over 2,200 fans packed Pelican Park tonight to see two things: Pelicans baseball and baseball legend Buck O'Neil. The game was tied at three going into the 9th inning when Coastal Bend scrapped three runs to win 6-3.
Pensacola jumped on top early, 2-0 in the first inning thanks to a two-run homerun by Carlos Mendoza, his 4th of the season.
Bernard Caston led the game with a walk and then scored off of Mendoza's homer.
The Pelicans added one more in the 2nd when Caston hit an RBI fielders choice that scored Trino Aguilar who singled up the middle earlier. Mike Pierre also doubled in the inning that moved Aguilar to third base.
Byron Batson held the Aviators scoreless the first two innings but surrendered three runs in the third inning, only one being earned.
Coastal Bend had three hits but was helped out by two Pelicans errors. Ben Tinius singled, Angel Rohena doubled and Kenny Hensley singled in the inning for the Aviators. The score would remain tied at three until the 9th inning.
Robbie Hebert came in in relief for Batson after he twisted his ankle coming off the mound. Hebert went on to pitch 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and striking out four batters.
Josh Courage started the 9th inning for the Pelicans and looked to hold the Aviators scoreless before Coastal Bend managed a two out rally that included three runs on three hits and one Pelicans error.
In the bottom of the 9th, Pensacola managed to get a runner on base off a Pierre single but that would be it as Pensacola would fall to (24-17) with the loss and Coastal Bend is now one game under .500 with a record of (20-21).
