Normal CornBelters News Release
Normal, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, are proud to announce that Field Manager, Hal Lanier, and Pitching Coach, Brooks Carey, have re-signed for the 2011 season. Before coaching the CornBelters during their inaugural season in 2010, the two had previously teamed up to coach the Sussex Skyhawks in 2008 and captured the independent Can-Am League Championship. Lanier, Carey, and the CornBelters plan to begin their second season in the independent Frontier League in May of 2011.
"We're thrilled to have Hal and Brooks back onboard," said CornBelters President, Steve Malliet. "Both are aware of our goals on the field, and I'm confident we'll provide our fans with competitive baseball again this season." When the CornBelters announced Lanier as their first-ever field manager a year ago, they knew were getting someone who was far from a first-timer in the world of professional baseball. He played 10 seasons with the San Francisco Giants and the New York Yankees (1964 - 1973), and his coaching resume spans 22 years with over 1,370 career wins. Highlights of his coaching career include earning a World Series ring as the St. Louis Cardinals third base coach in 1982 and a National League "Manager of the Year" award with the Houston Astros in 1986."I'm very excited about returning to the CornBelters this season," said Lanier upon re-signing. "We'll have a good core of players returning from last season and add some more experienced players to the mix."
Like Lanier, Carey is also no stranger to professional baseball. Besides coaching, he spent five seasons pitching in the Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds organizations (1978 - 1982)."I'm already looking forward to getting back to Normal and competing for a championship," said Carey. "It's great to be working for a first class organization like the CornBelters."
