Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - Jackson scored seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings on Monday night to earn a 7-1 victory in their series opener over the Tennessee Smokies. Leon Landry drove in three runs on a pair of singles in his 2015 debut for the Generals.
Jackson (3-6) trailed 1-0 for much of the contest, but stormed back with four runs in the seventh inning. Landry (2-for-5, 3 RBI, R) got the scoring started with an RBI single to tie the game at one. Two batters later, D.J. Peterson drove in his second run of the year on a fielder's choice to give the Generals a 2-1 edge.
After Peterson's at-bat, C.J. Edwards (0-1, 4.76) was removed from the game in favor of righty Andres Santiago. With runners on first and third, an errant throw from catcher Willson Contreras allowed both men to come home. Landry scored from third and Peterson came all the way around from first to make it 4-1 in favor of the Generals. All four runs in the frame were unearned thanks to a pair of Tennessee errors. The Smokies made four defensive miscues in the contest.
The Generals scored three earned runs in the eighth inning to put some distance between themselves and Tennessee (6-4). Jackson loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, setting the table for Steve Baron. Baron singled to centerfield to score Gabriel Guerrero, making it 5-1. Leon Landry, the next man up, promptly banged a single up the middle that plated a pair and gave the Generals a 7-1 edge.
Trevor Miller (S, 1) earned his first save of the season by pitching the final two innings of the contest without giving up a hit. Kyle Hunter (1-0, 3.18) picked up the victory, giving up just one hit in 1.2 innings of work.
Tennessee's lone run came in the second inning. Reigning Southern League Player of the Week Dan Vogelbach took Misael Siverio deep to right field. Siverio was spotless otherwise, allowing just the one run on two hits over 5.1 innings while striking out six and walking two.
Gabriel Guerrero extended his hitting streak to four games with a pair of singles in the contest. Jackson's seven runs were a season-high early in 2015.
The series continues on Tuesday night at The Ballpark at Jackson. Stephen Landazuri (0-0, 0.00), who has not allowed a run in eight innings this year, faces off against Tennessee's Corey Black (1-0, 3.00).
