MONTGOMERY, Ala. - They don't call it Sweet 16 for nothing.

The Biscuits bats came alive in a big way on Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium, hammering the visiting BayBears 16-1. Mobile spot starter Andrew Barbosa (0-1) lasted only 0.2 innings, surrendering five earned runs including a two-run triple by Tyler Goedell and a two-run infield single by Kes Carter, both in the first inning.

Biscuits starter Jaime Schultz (1-0) took it from there. The 23-year-old right-hander was outstanding in his third start of the season going six nearly unblemished innings, striking out eight and allowing three walks.

The most significant stat of Schultz's night, however, was the number of hits surrendered: zero. If the right-hander's pitch count of 88 through six innings had been a bit lower, Schultz might have been given a shot to continue the no-hit bid.

Right-handed reliever Mark Sappington was called out of the bullpen to preserve the lead and the no-no at the start of the seventh inning, and it wasn't until the eighth when Tom Belza broke it up with a single to left field just out of the reach of a diving Goeddel. The Biscuits shot at a shutout would be lost that same inning.

The Biscuits bats weren't finished up 8-1 entering the eighth inning though. In somewhat of a surprising move, instead of bringing in another relief pitcher, BayBears manager Robby Hammock opted for infielder Gerson Montilla to make his debut on the mound. And perhaps predictably, Montilla was less than effective, grooving batting practice fastballs to Biscuits hitters who rattled off seven straight singles before a Johnny Field, Jr. grand slam put the exclamation point at the end of an eight-run inning and a 16-1 victory.

The Biscuits have now won four in a row, and will look to get back to .500 for the first time since April 10 Tuesday morning in game two against Mobile. RH Austin Pruitt will be on the hill versus RH Aaron Blair.
