Pitcher and Player of the Week Named
April 20, 2015 - Southern League (SL1) News Release
MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for April 9th through the 19th. Righthander Tyler Duffey of the Chattanooga Lookouts was selected as the Pitcher of the Week with Tennessee Smokies first baseman Dan Vogelbach taking Player of the Week honors.
Over a league-high 13.2 innings, Duffey did not allow a run, while striking out 18 batters (second most). The Houston, Texas native held Southern League hitters to a .130 average (fifth lowest) and posted a miniscule WHIP of 0.59 (third lowest). Although he was unable to record a win in his two starts, Duffey pitched deep into both, exiting with the lead in each outing. On Opening Day in Montgomery, the Rice product struck out 10 batters in 6.2 innings, allowing just four hits and one walk. He followed with another brilliant performance on April 15th against the Birmingham Barons, firing seven innings of two-hit baseball, while adding eight more strikeouts. This is Duffey's second career weekly honors after he was selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week on July 28th of last season.
In nine games, Vogelbach frustrated League pitchers, posting a .484 batting average, which was 55 points higher than the next best in the loop. Furthermore, he led the league with a .579 on-base percentage and added top five numbers with 19 total bases, four doubles, seven walks, a .613 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.192. Hitting safely in his first eight games, Vogelbach also recorded five straight multi-hit games from April 12th through April 17th. His best performance came in a 6-3 win at Mississippi on the 12th when he went 3-for-5 at the plate, with a run, two doubles and a pair of RBIs. More importantly, the Orlando, Florida native helped lead the Smokies to a 6-3 record and an early share of the lead in the North Division.
