Omaha Lancers News Release
The Lancers scored a power play goal with 22 seconds remaining in overtime to claim A battle of division leaders, 5-4 over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, on Friday, March 16th, before 3,834 fans at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs. Andrew Conboy scored his fifth goal in his last three games; a blast from inside the blue line that surprised RoughRider goaltender Kent Patterson for the game winning goal in overtime.
Cedar Rapids opened the scoring with a goal from Doug Jones at 4:12 of the first period, but the Lancers answered less than a minute later, when Matt Thurber scored his seventh goal of the season from Travis Novak and Chris Hepp at 5:04. Mark Olver made it 2-1 Lancers when his breakaway shorthanded goal occurred at 10:13 of the first period. Cedar Rapids' Mike Seidel added a power play goal for a 2-2 tie at the first intermission.
In the second period, Nick Petrecki's power play goal, assisted by Conboy and Patrick Schafer at 9:48, gave the Lancers a 3-2 edge, until Tyler Thompson's goal at 11:01 tied the contest at 3-3. Petrecki's unassisted goal at 14:48 gave the Lancers a 4-3 advantage, until Cedar Rapids answered again with Tommy Wingels' power play goal at 15:42.
There would be no further scoring until Conboy's game winning heroics in the final seconds of overtime.
In the game, the Lancers scored once on the power play, but scored two shorthanded goals, while the RoughRiders scored twice with the extra man in nine opportunities.
Omaha out shot the RoughRiders 37-31 with Drew Palmisano making 27 saves in the winning effort, while Patterson took the loss for Cedar Rapids with a 32-save performance. Palmisano is now 18-8-4 overall (17-2-1 with the Lancers).
The win is the Lancers' 31st of the season (31-13-4) and is also the team's fourth straight victory. The win also keeps a non-loss streak alive which is now at 17 games (15-0-2) since mid-January.
