Lancers Fall in Series Opener To Buccaneers

The Des Moines Buccaneers took control of the Clark Cup playoff series with the Lancers on Wednesday, April 18th, with a 4-2 victory at the Mid America Center in game one of the best-of-seven playoff series.

After a scoreless first period, Des Moines gained the edge in the second period with a pair of goals, one on the power play. Andrew Olson's wrap-around goal at 5:57 gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead, which became 2-0, when Andrew Blazek's back-hand shot on the power play beat Lancer goalie Drew Palmisano at 13:15 of the middle frame.

The Lancers rallied in the third period, when Mark Olver scored his first playoff goal of the series, assisted by Barry Almeida and Patrick Schafer, at the 4:54 mark of the frame, that cut the deficit to 2-1. The Lancers tied the game when Almeida scored his first playoff goal, and first playoff power play tally, assisted by Olver and Travis Novak, at 10:44 for a 2-2 tie.

However, the Buccaneers answered with goals from Michael Dorr and Derek Elliott later in the period to clinch the win.

The Lancers out shot the Bucs 31-26 in the contest, including 14 shots on goal in the first period, but were held to only six in the second period.

Drew Palmisano took the loss in net for the Lancers, making 22 saves, while Matt Dalton won the contest in the crease for Des Moines with a 29-save effort.

Each team scored once on the power play, as the Lancers were 1-for-6 with the man advantage, and Des Moines was 1-for-5.

Game two of the best-of-seven series will be Friday, April 20th, in Des Moines, at 7:00 PM. Game three will be back at the Mid-America Center on Saturday, April 21st, also at 7 PM.
