Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, August 16-The Lancaster Barnstormers turned a pitchers duel into a rout, scoring 8 runs in the final two innings to defeat the Newark Bears, 10-3, Tuesday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Right-handers Andy Zwirchitz of Newark and Gil Perez of Lancaster traded zeros for most of the night and Lancaster held a 2-1 lead through seven innings until the late uprising. Zwirchitz (4-9) was the hard-luck loser, allowing two runs (on a Ryan Minor two-run single in the 4th inning) and three hits over six innings. He struck out eight batters and walked three, but still suffered the loss. Perez (2-1) pitched six innings of scoreless, three-hit ball to earn the victory.
Lancaster's Chris Van Rossum, a former Newark Bears outfielder, was 3-4 with two doubles and 3 RBI and Minor had two hits and 3 RBI.
For Newark, Tom McGee hit a solo home run, his 7th of the season and second in as many nights.
Newark and Lancaster will meet Wednesday in the third game of this four-game set with left-hander Brent Billingsley (5-7) making the start for the Bears.
