Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
San Antonio - The Grand Rapids Griffins (42-18-8-2) scored two goals in the first five minutes of the opening period en route to a 2-0 shutout of the San Antonio Rampage (33-25-10-3) on Saturday night at the SBC Center.
Marc Lamothe stopped all 26 shots he faced for his career-high fifth shutout of the season and league-leading 29th win of the season. Lamothe's five shutouts rank third in Griffins history, behind the six shutouts posted by Mike Fountain (2000-01) and Pokey Reddick (1996-97). Lamothe's 29 wins equals Jani Hurme (1999-00) for the third-highest output in a single season, trailing Fountain's (2000-01) 34 and Reddick's (1996-97) 30.
Mark Mowers opened the scoring for the Griffins when he banged in his own rebound 37 seconds into the game for his 30th goal of the season. Jason Williams won the draw to Michel Picard, who fired a slap shot from the top of the circle. Chris Mason stopped the shot, allowing Mowers two whacks at the rebound. Mowers' seven game-winning goals is the second-highest single-season total in Griffins history, trailing Picard's 12 game-winners during the 1996-97 campaign.
The Griffins used the same play to score their second goal, except this time Picard's shot sailed over Mason's glove and into the back of the net.
Williams earned the only assist on the goal for his 100th professional assist. Picard's two points on the night gives him 75 (27-48-75), two points ahead of Mowers (30-43-73) for the league scoring lead.
Mason stopped 24 shots in a losing effort for the Rampage.
The Griffins' road trip continues Sunday evening when they play the Chicago Wolves at Allstate Arena at 5:00.
