Erie Otters News Release
Saginaw, Michigan - Erie returned to the Dow Event Center on Saturday night for the final meeting of the season with the Saginaw Spirit. After the team's worst loss of the season, an 8-1 final in Saginaw, Erie would look to bounce back and stop their skid at four games. The final tilt of the season would be the 12th meeting between the two, with Erie looking to finish the season series out at 6-6. Nolan Lalonde and Tristan Lennox would get the nods in net yet again.
The first period of play wouldn't hold much to report on the scoresheet. With one opportunity for either team to showcase their power plays, the penalty killers would be the ones to come through. After taking nearly half the period to record the first shot, Erie would finish the period leading in shots 9-5, but the score would remain the same as how the game started, 0-0.
Offensive prowess would return in the second period, as both teams would find shot opportunities and offensive-zone success. While the Otters would suffer four different times on the penalty kill, the blessing from this curse would be the first goal of the game. Daniel D'Amato would connect with Brendan Sellan (15) on a one-timer for a short-handed goal, and the first and only goal of the second period. Erie would be outshot 12-6, but take a 1-0 lead into the final period of play - with the penalty kill 5/5.
Erie's recipe for success in the third period would be keeping the puck away from the lethal sticks of Saginaw's better scorers. Through the first half of the period, Erie would have the Spirit stuck in their defensive end. The trend would continue for Erie, as they would continue to force the issue. On a breakaway opportunity for Brendan Sellan, he would be tripped and receive a penalty shot - unsuccessfully. On the ensuing faceoff, Erie would strike from a D'Amato connect to Sellan, but the goal would be called off for Goaltender Interference. With the net empty, Noah Sedore (10) would put the game on ice, and Nolan Lalonde would finish the job for his first career Ontario Hockey League shutout, and the first shutout of the season for Erie.
Erie would take the win 2-0, thanks to Lalonde's 23/23 performance in net. This win stops a four-game skid for Erie as well. The three-game swing in the Mitten State comes to an end on Sunday afternoon in the Vehicle City, as the Erie Otters look for their first win against the Flint Firebirds this season. The next three games for Erie will all be against Flint, as they host the team for a pair at home on March 4 and 5.
