Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

ABERDEEN, MD --- Jason Martinson went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBI as the Vermont Lake Monsters opened an 11-game roadtrip with a 7-1 victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds at Ripken Stadium on Saturday night to regain sole possession of first-place in the New York-Penn League's Stedler Division.

The Lake Monsters are now 1/2 game in front of Tri-City (2-1 winners over Hudson Valley) for first in the Stedler, while Connecticut falls one game behind Vermont after a 10-0 home loss to Brooklyn on Saturday.

Vermont, which was held to just one hit in a loss to Connecticut on Friday, was held without a hit on Saturday until the fifth inning when Ronnie LaBrie tripled to rightfield with one out. Martinson followed by smacking the first pitch over the leftfield fence for his second home run of the season and a 2-0 lead.

The Lake Monsters increased the lead to 5-0 in the sixth on RBI singles from Russell Moldenhauer, Wade Moore and Martinson off Aberdeen starter Tim Adelman (2-4), who allowed five runs on three hits with three walks in 5 1/3 innings for the loss.

Aberdeen got its lone run of the game in the seventh off reliever Ryan Demmin as Kipp Schultz led off with a double and scored two batters later on a Adam Gaylord sacrifice fly. The Lake Monsters added single runs in the eighth on a throwing error and in the ninth on a bases loaded walk to Martinson.

Vermont starter Bobby Hansen retired the first two batters in each of the four innings that he pitched in, but struggled with two walks, two hit batters and a wild pitch on a strikeout to go just 3 2/3 innings. Ryan Mattheus (1-0), making his first appearance for the Lake Monsters on a rehab assignment, tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory.

The Ironbirds had just seven hits off Vermont pitching, but had multiple base runners in seven of their nine inning with the help of six Lake Monster walks. But Aberdeen was 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left a total of 16 batters on base in the loss.

Moore was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI for Vermont (32-31), while Blake Kelso was 2-for-5 with a run. David Anderson was 3-for-4 and Schultz 2-for-5 for Aberdeen (31-34), which has lost four straight and six of its last seven games.

Vermont and Aberdeen will play the second of the three-game series at Ripken Stadium on Sunday beginning at 5:35 pm with Taylor Jordan scheduled to start for the Lake Monsters.
