Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
TROY, NY --- After being held hitless for the first 5 1/3 innings and to just two hits over the first seven frame, the Vermont Lake Monsters rallied from a two-run deficit with two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings for a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats Saturday night in New York-Penn League action.
Trailing 2-0 in the eighth, Vermont tied game as Javier Godard followed an error, walk and fielder's choice with a bases loaded two-run single. Then after Lake Monsters reliever Jhenderson Hurtado stranded runners at second and third in the bottom of the eighth, Roger Gonzalez led off the ninth with a single and pinch runner James Terrell advanced to second on a Jordan Devencenzi walk.
After a bunt pop out and a groundout that advanced the runners to second and third, Jesus Lopez lined a 1-0 pitch to left field for a two-out, two-run single to give Vermont the 4-2 lead. Reliever Marc Berube worked around a two-out walk to close out the game and earn his first save of the season.
Tri-City starter Cesar Rosado retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced (six by strikeout), allowing just a one-out walk to Gonzalez in the second inning. ValleyCats reliever Colin McKee got a groundout to start the sixth inning before Lopez broke up the no-hit bid with a line drive double to right. McKee (0-1) was charged with all four Vermont runs (three earned) on four hits with three walks to take the loss.
The ValleyCats took a 2-0 lead in the second as Vermont starter Oscar Tovar walked two of the first three batters in the inning before a Luis Payano RBI double and Andy Pineda an RBI single. Tovar got out of further trouble with an inning-ending double play, finishing his outing with two runs allowed on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts over four innings.
Hurtado (1-0) came on in relief of Tovar to start the fifth and tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just two singles and striking out five to pick up the win. Lopez was 2-for-3 with a walk, run, double and the two-run single as Vermont won its second straight game to get to the .500 mark (3-3) for the first time since the Lake Monsters were 17-17 last season.
The Lake Monsters and ValleyCats will play the second of the three-game series at Tri-City on Sunday starting at 5:05 pm. After the series finale Monday and an off day Tuesday, Vermont will return home Wednesday for the start of a five-game homestand against Staten Island and Lowell through Sunday, July 2nd.
