Lake Elsinore Snaps San Jose's Nine-Game Win Streak
September 6, 2009 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release
Lake Elsinore's Jeremy Hefner allowed two runs over a season-high eight innings pitched to lead the Storm to a 4-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Saturday evening at The Diamond. The loss snapped San Jose's season-high tying win streak at nine games as the Giants hit into three double plays in the first five innings and managed only one baserunner over the final four frames. The loss drops San Jose's overall record to 91-47 with two games remaining in the regular season. The Giants need to win both of their remaining games to set a team record for most victories in a single season.
Hefner (14-6) limited the Giants to seven hits and worked through a pair of solo home runs to earn the victory. The right-hander, who is third in the California League in wins and fourth in strikeouts, walked none and fanned five during his stint on the mound. Bryan Oland then struck out two in a perfect top of the ninth to pick-up his 28th save.
C.J. Ziegler and Nestor Rojas both hit home runs to account for all of the San Jose offense. Rojas (2-for-3, HR, RBI) was the lone Giants player to finish with a multi-hit game.
The Storm jumped ahead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth against San Jose starting pitcher Oliver Odle. Consecutive singles from Matt Clark and Brian Joynt started the frame before Danny Payne drew a walk to load the bases. Andy Parrino was up next and he brought home the first run of the night with a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop and then Luis Martinez delivered an RBI single into center to make it 2-0. Chris Tremblay followed with a single of his own to drive home another run as Lake Elsinore extended their lead to 3-0.
Odle (8-12) suffered the loss for the Giants after surrendering three runs (all earned) on seven hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked one.
Odle began his outing by setting down six consecutive hitters and then was able to pitch out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third. The San Jose starter retired eight Storm batters in a row after Tremblay's RBI single to finish his evening.
The Giants picked-up leadoff singles in the second, fourth and fifth innings against Hefner, but double play groundouts wiped out the baserunners in each frame. San Jose finally broke through in the top of the fifth when Ziegler connected for a two-out, solo homer to left. Hefner then retired six in a row before Rojas stepped to the plate with two outs in the seventh and belted a home run to deep left center field. The homer, Rojas' third of the season, brought San Jose to within 3-2.
Lake Elsinore though moved back ahead by two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Tremblay led off by drawing a walk against reliever Wilmin Rodriguez, advanced to second on Brad Chalk's sacrifice bunt, took third when Keoni Ruth grounded out and scored on James Darnell's single into left field.
The Giants would not manage another base runner for the remainder of the night after Rojas' home run as Hefner set down Brian Bocock on a deep fly out to end the seventh before working a perfect top of the eighth. Oland entered to begin the top of the ninth and after Nick Noonan flied out to center, Thomas Neal and Roger Kieschnick both struck out swinging to end the game.
Notes: San Jose's nine-game win streak matched the fifth-longest in team history ... They also won nine in a row earlier this season from July 5-13 ... Lake Elsinore had 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position (4-for-11) while the Giants had only one (0-for-1) ... Rodriguez (2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) was the lone San Jose reliever to appear in the game ... The Giants own a slim 3-2 advantage over the Storm in the season series.
On Deck: The Giants and Storm continue their series on Sunday evening with first pitch at The Diamond scheduled for 5:05 PM. Craig Clark (15-2, 2.96 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Lake Elsinore is expected to counter with Jon Berger (0-1, 15.73 ERA). The game can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com.
