April 30, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
LOS ANGELES - The LA Galaxy announced today that the club has signed forward Augustine Williams from LA Galaxy II. Williams, 23, was named the 2020 LA Galaxy II Player of the Year after leading Los Dos with 13 goals - the second most in the USL Championship - during the 2020 campaign. The forward, who joins on a one-year contract with two option years, holds a U.S. passport and will not occupy an International Roster spot on the LA Galaxy roster.
"Augustine is a productive and talented forward who has shown his quality with LA Galaxy II," said LA Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese. "He is a player that we have seen excel at the USL Championship level and we believe will continue to develop on the field. He will provide good depth to our attack and we are pleased to add him to our roster."
Williams, who was named to the USL All-League First Team in 2020 with LA Galaxy II, had a breakout campaign to help lead Los Dos into the USL Championship Playoffs for a second consecutive year. In all, he recorded 13 goals and two assists and finished second in the race for the USL Championship's Golden Boot. Williams played a key role down the stretch for the Galaxy II last year, scoring seven goals in the side's final seven games of the regular season.
Williams, who originally joined Portland Timbers 2 in 2016, has tallied 31 career goals in the USL Championship across his time with Portland (2016-2018) and LA Galaxy II (2019-2020). Additionally, he scored a goal for the Portland Timbers in a U.S. Open Cup contest against the Seattle Sounders in 2017.
Before being signed by Portland Timbers 2, the Sierra Leone native played for Nomads SC U-17/18 in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy during the 2015-16 season, where he recorded 20 goals and six assists in 41 games. Williams also played for Juventus Club, based out of Redwood, Calif., and Alliance F.C. in Hayward Calif.
Williams signs with the LA Galaxy following the club's acquisitions of defender Séga Coulibaly (AS Nancy), forward Kévin Cabral (Valenciennes FC), midfielder Victor Vázquez (free agent), winger Samuel Grandsir (AS Monaco), defender Derrick Williams (Blackburn Rovers F.C.), midfielder Carlos Harvey (Tauro F.C.), defender Oniel Fisher (free agent), defender Jorge Villafaña (Portland Timbers), goalkeeper Jonathan Bond (West Bromwich Albion F.C.), defender Marcus Ferkranus (LA Galaxy Academy), midfielder Adam Saldaña (LA Galaxy Academy) and defender Jalen Neal (LA Galaxy Academy) and the signing of goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann to a new contract.
In their next match, the LA Galaxy will travel to face Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field on Sunday, May 2 at 6 p.m. PT. After winning their opening two contests to start the 2021 MLS Regular Season, the LA Galaxy are the only MLS club to secure six points this season and are tied for the league lead in goals this year.
