April 28, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
LOS ANGELES - The LA Galaxy announced today that the club has signed French defender Séga Coulibaly from AS Nancy in France's Ligue 2. Coulibaly, 24, joins the LA Galaxy after playing professionally for multiple clubs in France since 2013. He signs with the LA Galaxy on a two-year contract with a one-year option and will be added to the club's roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
"Séga is a talented, versatile defender with good experience and we believe he can continue to grow as a player with our club," said LA Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese. "We are confident in his ability to contribute to our defense as we add another player who will compete along our backline. We look forward to Séga joining the club and to his contributions with the LA Galaxy."
Coulibaly joins the LA Galaxy after notching over 100 professional appearances throughout various competitions in France, including Ligue 2, Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue and Championnat National competition, among others. He also tallied four goals and an assist from his defensive position.
The defender represented the Rennes reserve side from 2013-2016 before signing with Ligue 1 side Rennes, where he spent two years on loan at CS Sedan and US Avranches the following two seasons. In 2018, he joined AS Nancy in Ligue 2 and went on to make 45 appearances for the club during his time there, and an additional 16 appearances for US Avranches during another loan spell.
Internationally, Coulibaly represented France's youth national teams on various levels. From 2011-2016, he appeared in multiple competitions for France's U-16, U-17, U-18 and U-20 sides, making 20 total international appearances during that span.
Coulibaly signs with the LA Galaxy following the club's acquisitions of forward Kévin Cabral (Valenciennes FC), midfielder Victor Vázquez (free agent), winger Samuel Grandsir (AS Monaco), defender Derrick Williams (Blackburn Rovers F.C.), midfielder Carlos Harvey (Tauro F.C.), defender Oniel Fisher (free agent), defender Jorge Villafaña (Portland Timbers), goalkeeper Jonathan Bond (West Bromwich Albion F.C.), defender Marcus Ferkranus (LA Galaxy Academy), midfielder Adam Saldaña (LA Galaxy Academy) and defender Jalen Neal (LA Galaxy Academy) and the signing of goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann to a new contract.
In their next match, the LA Galaxy will travel to face Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field on Sunday, May 2 at 6 p.m. PT. After winning their opening two contests to start the 2021 MLS Regular Season, the LA Galaxy are the only MLS club to secure six points this season and are tied for the league lead in goals this year.
